FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Dental Law Changes Clear Senate; Head to GovernorLegislation will expand the scope of practice for dental assistants The State Senate today approved legislation that would amend the Dental Law by expanding the scope of practice for "expanded function" dental assistants, according to Senator Jane C. Orie (R-40), prime sponsor of the Senate version (Senate Bill 385). House Bill 602 would amend the definition of an expanded function dental assistant to authorize them to perform additional procedures under direct supervision of a dentist who personally diagnoses the condition, authorizes the procedure and remains in the office while the procedure is performed. Under the bill, expanded function dental assistants would be allowed to polish teeth, provide fluoride treatments and take impressions of teeth for athletic purposes. The bill would also ensure that expanded function dental assistants are represented on the State Board of Dentistry. "I am pleased that this legislation passed the Senate. It did not matter whether it was my bill or the House version that was passed. What matters is that we sent a bill to the Governor that improves access to dental care for patients," said Sen. Orie. House Bill 602 is now before the Governor for his approval.
