Senator Orie Re-Elected Senate Majority Whip

(HARRISBURG) -- Senate Republicans today elected their leadership team for the 2009-2010 legislative session, re-electing Senator Jane Clare Orie (R-Allegheny) to her second term as the third-highest position of Majority Whip.

Her duties include acting as assistant floor leader, working to gain support for legislation and assuring that Republican policies and strategies are maintained through the cooperative efforts of the majority caucus.

"In this upcoming legislative session, we are facing tough economic times and very difficult choices for this Commonwealth," Orie said.  "The Senate Republican Caucus is committed to passing a fiscally responsible budget, holding the line of excessive spending and opposing costly new government programs that could hurt our economy.  These are our top priorities in the coming year."

Orie was nominated by Senator Jane Earll (R-Erie).  Her nomination was seconded by Senator John Pippy (R-Allegheny).

Orie was first elected to the State Senate in March 2001 in a special election and won re-election to a full four-year-term in 2002 and 2006. Prior to taking her seat in the Pennsylvania State Senate, she spent 4 ½ years in the State House of Representatives.  She was first nominated to the position of Majority Whip in November 2006.

She will join a Republican leadership in the Senate that includes:

  • Senator Joe Scarnati, (R-25), President Pro Tempore. The full Senate will vote on Scarnati's nomination when it reconvenes in January.
  • Senator Dominic Pileggi, (R-9), Senate Majority Leader
  • Senator Jake Corman, (R-34), Appropriations Committee Chairman
  • Senator Mike Waugh, (R-28), Majority Caucus Chairman
  • Senator Bob Robbins (R-50), Majority Caucus Secretary

"I'm honored to have been re-elected by my colleagues to this position, and I will continue to work hard for the people of my district and all of Pennsylvania to develop a strong legislative agenda," Orie said.
